About Us.
Independent in Voice. United in Purpose.
In 2021, a group of Howard alumni came together with a shared belief: alumni need an independent voice in the future of Howard University—one with the autonomy to advocate for the rights and interests of Howard’s primary stakeholders following the abolition of shared governance.
That vision became Howard Alumni United, Inc. (HAU), incorporated in 2023 to bring Howard University alumni, students, faculty, and supporters together around a shared commitment to connection, service, opportunity, and excellence.
HAU believes the Howard experience creates a lifelong bond—and that our collective voice, experience, and commitment can help strengthen the Howard University alumni community and create meaningful opportunities for future Bison.
We provide an independent space for alumni to connect, engage, serve, and lead while remaining united by the values and traditions that make our beloved alma mater so special.

Our Howard. Our Voice. Our Future.
Why Alumni Independence Matters
Howard alumni are a powerful and diverse community whose perspectives, experiences, and ideas extend far beyond the years we spent on the yard. An independent alumni organization provides space for those voices to come together, collaborate, and chart a path forward together.
Independence gives alumni the opportunity to:
Build community.
Create meaningful connections among Bison across generations, professions, geographic locations, and experiences.
Amplify student, alumni, and faculty voices.
Provide a space where students, alumni, and faculty can share ideas, perspectives, and priorities, and participate meaningfully in dialogue that affects the greater Howard University community.
Engage with integrity.
An independent alumni voice creates room for thoughtful, principled dialogue with our alma mater, including the ability to respectfully challenge the University when necessary. Independence allows us to advocate for what we believe is in the best interests of Howard University’s legacy, its students, alumni, and faculty, without compromising our integrity, accountability, and respect.
Create opportunities.
Connect alumni with one another and with students through mentoring, professional development and networking, service, and other forms of engagement.
Serve with purpose.
Harness the resources, talents, and collective energy of alumni to support students and contribute to the broader Howard University community.
Shape our future.
Build on the work we have started while developing HAU’s capacity to address the needs, aspirations, and concerns of the Howard University community.
Independent Does Not Mean Disconnected.
HAU believes independence and unity can—and should—coexist.
Our independence does not diminish our loyalty to Howard University. It strengthens our ability to engage with our beloved alma mater from a position of integrity, accountability, and respect for the broader Howard University community.
We believe meaningful alumni engagement requires both loyalty and candor. Being committed to Howard means celebrating its accomplishments, supporting its students, faculty members, and traditions, and also being willing to ask the difficult questions, offer constructive perspectives, and advocate for positive change when circumstances call for it.
Our independence allows HAU to establish its own priorities, programs, and partnerships while remaining deeply connected to the Howard University community. We seek to complement—not compete with—existing Howard alumni organizations, and to create additional opportunities for alumni to connect, contribute, and serve.
Our shared foundation is simple: We are Bison, and our connection to Howard is lifelong.
